Buchholz has won every time he's taken the mound. |
The Sox are doing it with exceptional pitching; their staff has the most strikeouts in baseball (248), and the lowest batting average against (.221), which is crazy for an A.L. team. Clay Buchholz, Jon Lester, and Felix Doubront are a combined 12-0 in 14 starts, with a total of 96 K's in 92.2 innings pitched.
And I can't leave out David Ortiz, who's 20 game hitting streak (dating back to last year) is the longest for a DH since Paul Molitor in 1987. Big Papi went 2-4 on Sunday, and his season batting average dropped to .516.
One other fact worth noting, when I wrote a brief A.L. East season preview back on April 1st, the main point I made was that the division would be wide open. The current standings are the exact opposite of what ESPN predicted them to be.
