Yesterday TMZ Sports published a story containing the following:

"We contacted Canseco about video he says he shot of the finger fail -- and when push came to shove ... he had to cop to the prank. Jose says he cooked up the plan when he came across the fake finger in a Halloween store."

So in summary, Canseco shot off part of a finger while cleaning four guns at once, had it reattached, then decided as a prank to make up a weird/long/gross story about it falling off again.
